Chapter six
âGeorge, I know you still have the photo.â
Bridgman Hansen had niggled on and off about the âevidenceâ during the month since Leila had won the bet.
âI deleted it, Bridg. That was my deal with Leila. I saw it and it was convincing... then I deleted it. There are no doubts about it, Leila won fair and square so leave it alone.â
He glanced quickly at Bridg. It wasn't like him to be petty, but somehow his friend seemed to be unable to leave the whole thing about the bet alone. It could be about not being able to win, but lately George had begun to suspect that it might be Leila who was unknowingly driving his obsession.
Since the bet, Leila had been largely absent from their group, seemingly inseparable from her tutor and it was an open secret around the campus that they had become lovers. The more George thought about it, the more it looked like Bridg was jealous. But of who? Of Leila in captivating Marianne, who he had confessed to having a crush on? Or of Marianne who had won the heart of the cool, distant, unavailable Leila.
âI could make it worth your while, George.â
George looked up. âWorth my while to what?â
His friend gave a louche grin. âWouldnât, say, two hundred dollars come in useful at this stage of semester?â
âFor what, though?â George resisted.
âAs recompense for... undeleting... the photo Leila sent you.â
George laughed. âNot gonna happen, Bridg.â
But at five hundred dollars, it did happen. Bridg had taken the cash out of his wallet and fanned it onto the table alluringly. Five hundred was an awful lot of money; money that George needed. He was tired of scrimping and scraping and five hundred would allow him to breathe, at least till the end of the year and so he crumbled, pocketed the cash and sent the image to Bridg.
Of course, he hadnât quite been able to delete the photo as heâd told Leila, and such was its beauty and erotic fascination, he couldnât resist looking at it now and again in the privacy of his room. Ms Nicholas was a fantasy for him... he masturbated thinking about her and now he had an erotic image of her, feeding his fantasy. He could not possibly send it to the trash can.
George genuinely hadn't thought about a monetary value but Bridg, with his persistence, had shown him just how much that one, phone camera jpg that sat quietly in his pictures folder was really worth.
Five hundred bucks - and a promise that the image would go no further than Bridgman himself - had simply been too much to pass up.
Later in his room, Bridg transferred the image to his laptop and opened it full screen. He registered, but was unimpressed by the quality of the picture, the subject perfectly lit by afternoon sunlight. But the beauty of Marianne, naked, sleeping and blissfully unaware of the coming invasion, was far more impressive.
âMr Foxy, Mr Foxy, you sly old thing. You saw it all, didn't you.
